A rare, refined evergreen shrub with glossy foliage, subtle blooms, and year-round elegance.

Viburnum propinquum is a rarely cultivated evergreen shrub, native to the misty woodlands of central and western China, and scarcely available in U.S. nurseries—Woodlanders is among the few to offer it. This hardy, broadleaf evergreen is a true connoisseur’s Viburnum, treasured for its lustrous, narrow, dark green leaves that offer exceptional structure and foliage interest throughout the year.

In spring, the shrub produces flat-topped clusters of pale greenish-white flowers, modest in appearance but valuable to early pollinators. These are followed in late summer to fall by small, glossy black berries, which add further ornamental appeal and are relished by birds. While its flowers and fruit are understated, the real glory of Viburnum propinquum lies in its clean, architectural foliage, making it a standout foundation plant or shaded border specimen.

Reaching 6 to 10 feet in height and width, this shrub thrives in moist, well-drained soil and prefers shade to partial shade, making it especially well-suited for the woodland garden or understory plantings in the Southern U.S. and other mild climates. It is both deer-resistant and drought-tolerant once established, offering year-round performance with minimal fuss.
