Calycanthus floridus

$16.00

| Hardiness Zones 5-9

Upright colony-forming deciduous shrub with dark maroon 1-2" flowers with many sepals and similar petals. Renowned for its fruity fragrance but not all plants have fragrant flowers or they are not consistently fragrant. A woodland plant but suited to sun, shade, or partial shade. A great favorite in old gardens and something of an "heirloom plant". Native to southeastern U.S.

Flower/Foliage

Flower:

The flowers of Calycanthus floridus are striking and fragrant, typically blooming in mid-spring. They are unique in appearance, with maroon to reddish-brown, strap-like petals that give them a somewhat whimsical, ruffled look. The flowers have a sweet, fruity fragrance, often compared to strawberries or bananas, making them a sensory delight. They are about 2-3 inches in diameter and are borne on short, woody stems.

Fruit:

After flowering, Calycanthus floridus produces small, cone-shaped fruits that are brownish and typically remain on the plant into the winter. These fruits are not particularly showy but provide visual interest in the fall and winter months. The fruit is dry, woody, and contains numerous seeds, which can be dispersed by wind or animals.

Foliage:

The foliage of Calycanthus floridus is dark green, with an ovate to lanceolate shape. The leaves are about 4-6 inches long, with a glossy texture on top and a slightly paler, more matte underside. The leaves are aromatic when crushed and tend to turn a golden-yellow color in the fall before dropping for the winter. The overall shape of the shrub is dense and bushy, contributing to its visual appeal even when not in bloom.

fragrant, dark red-brown, May sporadically to September

Planting:

  • Location: Sweetshrub thrives in moist, well-drained soils and prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun. It is adaptable to various soil types and works well in garden borders, near entrances, or in native gardens.
  • Planting Depth: Plant the crown at soil level.

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: After planting, water the roots and surrounding area slowly and deeply. Keep the soil moist until the plant is established.
  • Ongoing Care: Once established, water thoroughly when the soil is dry or during drought conditions. Modify watering based on site drainage and rainfall.

Mulching:

  • Apply a 3-inch layer of mulch around the plant to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning:

  • Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.

Fertilization:

  • Sweetshrub is generally low-maintenance and may not require regular fertilization. If growth appears slow or foliage is yellowing, a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can be applied in early spring.

Pest and Disease Resistance:

  • Sweetshrub is resistant to disease and insect problems.

Additional Notes:

  • Sweetshrub is known for its sweet, fruity fragrance, making it a pleasant addition to gardens.
  • It adapts to many soil types and tends to grow taller in shaded areas.

With proper care, Calycanthus floridus can be a lovely and fragrant addition to your garden.
