Dwarf Waxmyrtle

Morella pumila

$23.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

The dwarf waxmyrtle native to frequently burned pinelands in the southern U.S. is also known as Myrica cerifera pumila or Myrica pusilla. It is a dense spreading evergreen shrub with small aromatic leaves that can form patches or colonies by underground runners. Female plants have small dark berries similar to those of the larger Waxmyrtle (Myrica cerifera). Woodlanders may have been one of the first nurseries to make this shrub available to the gardening public. It makes a good ornamental plant in sandy, well-drained, acid soil in a sunny location.

Foliage Details:

  • Type: Morella pumila is a small, evergreen shrub with dense, aromatic foliage.
  • Leaves: The leaves are alternate, lance-shaped, and leathery, typically about 1 to 3 inches long. They have a glossy, dark green appearance and emit a pleasant fragrance when crushed, similar to other members of the Morella genus. The edges of the leaves are often smooth or slightly toothed.
  • Growth Habit: The plant has a compact, mounding habit, typically growing 3 to 6 feet tall with a similar spread, making it ideal for small spaces or as a low hedge.

Flower Details:

  • Type: Morella pumila is monoecious, meaning that both male and female flowers occur on the same plant, allowing for self-pollination.
  • Bloom Time: Flowers appear in early spring, typically between March and April.
  • Description: The flowers are small and inconspicuous, appearing as catkin-like structures. Male flowers are yellowish-green, while female flowers are smaller and less noticeable. Although the flowers are not showy, they are essential for the production of fruit later in the season.

Light: Morella pumila thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. For optimal growth, it should receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily, although it may adapt to slightly shadier conditions.

Soil: This plant prefers well-drained, sandy, or loamy soils, much like its relatives in the Morella genus. It can tolerate nutrient-poor conditions due to its nitrogen-fixing root system, making it an excellent choice for challenging environments.

Watering: Morella pumila is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering, particularly during the first year of growth. It prefers moderately moist soil but can withstand occasional dry spells. In its native habitat, it often grows near coastal areas, so it can also tolerate some salinity in the soil.

Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9, Morella pumila can tolerate frost but thrives in temperate climates with mild winters and warm summers.

Fertilizer: Fertilization is generally unnecessary due to the plant's nitrogen-fixing properties. However, adding compost in the spring can support healthier growth.

Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring helps maintain a compact form and promotes new growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches to improve airflow and reduce the risk of disease.

Propagation: Morella pumila can be propagated by seeds or softwood cuttings. Seeds may require stratification for better germination, and softwood cuttings taken in spring tend to root more easily.

Pests/Diseases: This species is largely pest-free but may occasionally be affected by aphids or scale. It's also resistant to most diseases but ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.
