Sweet Viburnum

Viburnum odoratissimum

$23.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-10

This large-leafed evergreen Viburnum native to Asia is often confused withV. awabuki, but its leaves are shorter and broader, not so glossy, and it may be a little less cold hardy. The pure white flowers are fragrant and followed by red to black fruit. The leaves emit foul odor when crushed. Birds enjoy the fruit. Plant in good soil that is moist but well drained and in sun or semi-shade.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Sweet Viburnum thrives in bright light conditions but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Full sun will encourage the best growth and flowering, but it can adapt to less intense light without significant issues.

Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil. Viburnum odoratissimum grows best in rich, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5). It is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, provided they are well-draining. Incorporating organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure into the soil can improve its fertility and structure, promoting healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Sweet Viburnum is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool, particularly in hot weather.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-10. Viburnum odoratissimum prefers warm, temperate climates and is well-suited to areas with mild winters. It is sensitive to frost and should be protected in colder regions. The plant thrives in areas with moderate to high humidity, mimicking its native subtropical environment.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. A second application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its peak growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or leaf mold, are also beneficial and can be incorporated into the soil annually.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Sweet Viburnum responds well to pruning and can be shaped into a hedge or maintained as a small tree. Regular pruning helps keep the plant compact and encourages more vigorous growth and flowering.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by common garden pests like aphids, scale insects, or spider mites. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant can help prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or leaf spot. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and good garden hygiene are essential for maintaining plant health.
