Butterfly Weed

Asclepias tuberosa

$18.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 4-9

This strong-growing perennial native to Eastern North America is a favorite of gardeners. Flower color can range from yellow to almost red but bright orange is typical. It is best grown in a sunny location with well drained soil and will flower over an extended period especially if cut back to abort the formation of the long seed pods which open to release fluffy "parachutes" by which the wind widely distributes the attached seeds.

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Full Sun

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 12 - 24 Inches

Spread at Maturity: 15 - 24 Inches

Flower Structure: Produces clusters of bright orange, yellow, or red flowers.

Blooming Season: Blooms from late spring through summer.

Fragrance: The flowers have a mild fragrance that attracts pollinators.

Visual Impact: The vibrant flowers create a striking display in the garden, complemented by the plant’s green foliage.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun; needs at least six hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil; adaptable to various soil types including sandy, loamy, and rocky soils. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.

Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. After establishment, water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 3-9; tolerates a wide range of temperatures and climates. Prefers dry to moderately humid conditions.

Fertilization: Minimal fertilization needed; an annual application of compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can support healthy growth.

Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent unwanted reseeding. Cut back the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring to promote vigorous new growth.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant; occasional issues may include aphids, milkweed beetles, and spider mites. If pest infestations occur, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Proper spacing ensures good air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

Suitable Environment: Ideal for butterfly gardens, native plant gardens, and wildflower meadows; attracts butterflies, particularly monarchs, and other pollinators.
