Callicarpa dichotoma 'Splashy'

Callicarpa dichotoma belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae, though the beautyberries wear their kinship lightly. The genus name comes from the Greek kallos, beauty, and karpos, fruit, a promise the plant keeps every autumn, while the epithet dichotoma describes the way the slender branches fork in neat pairs, giving the shrub a tiered, arching silhouette. Native across East Asia, from China and Korea into Japan and Vietnam, the purple beautyberry has long been grown for that moment in late summer when clusters of small violet fruits ripen along the stems and hold on well after the leaves have gone.

'Splashy' is the painterly one. Where the species carries plain green leaves, this selection is marked with irregular white blotches and streaks across most of the foliage, as though someone had flicked a loaded brush down the length of each branch. The plant came to us through our friend Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana, who introduced the selection from Japan, and earned the name 'Splashy' from Woodlanders' own Bob McCartney, who has always had an eye for the right word. 'Splashy' appears to stay lower and more compact than the typical species, and the berries come a little more sparingly, a fair trade for foliage that carries the show from spring until frost. Next to a white house the variegation may read as though the painters got a bit careless, which is either a warning or an invitation, depending on your walls.

The beautyberries have a working life beyond ornament. In traditional Chinese medicine, several Callicarpa species were valued as blood-staunching and anti-inflammatory herbs, the leaves and roots prepared to calm swelling, ease aching joints, and clear what old texts called heat. Modern laboratory work has taken an interest in the genus as well, isolating diterpenes and flavonoids from Callicarpa dichotoma and testing them for anti-inflammatory activity, though this remains early research rather than settled medicine. None of that history is a reason to brew a cutting from the garden; 'Splashy' earns a place for the eye, not the medicine cabinet.

In the garden, treat the variegation as a source of light. 'Splashy' glows against a dark backdrop, a yew hedge, a stand of evergreens, the shadowed edge of a woodland, where the creamy leaves lift the whole planting and the autumn berries read like scattered amethyst. Give the shrub full sun to part shade and reasonably drained soil, cut the stems back hard in late winter since flowers and fruit both come on new wood, and let the birds find the berries once the color has finished. Massed along a path or set as a single specimen where low light needs breaking, this beautyberry is a quiet, season-long performer that saves a genuine flourish for fall.
