US‑942 Citrus Rootstock – Resilient Roots, Exceptional Fruit

Born from the careful cross of Sunki mandarin and Flying Dragon trifoliate orange, US‑942 is a modern rootstock that balances the grit of traditional citrus with the brilliance of scientific breeding. Released by the USDA in 2010 after extensive field trials across Florida, US‑942 quickly proved itself a top performer—resisting Phytophthora, tristeza virus, and even tolerating HLB better than most.

This rootstock brings more than hardiness. It’s known for producing compact, efficient trees with outstanding yield per canopy volume. In Polk County, trees on US‑942 out-yielded every other rootstock tested, producing fruit not only in abundance but of exceptional internal quality. Even in challenging growing conditions, the fruit maintains some of the highest total soluble solids (TSS) levels recorded—sweet, rich, and deeply satisfying.

And as Herschel from Madison Citrus puts it, “This is some of my absolute favorite trifoliate fruit. Hands down.” That’s not just high praise—it’s proof in the peel.

Whether you’re a seasoned grower or a hopeful orchardist, US‑942 offers reliability, productivity, and taste in one deeply rooted package.

Highlights:

  • 🛡️ Disease Tolerance: Strong resistance to citrus tristeza virus, Phytophthora, and citrus blight; HLB-tolerant

  • 🌿 Efficient Growth: Smaller trees with high yield efficiency and fruit quality

  • 🍊 Outstanding Flavor: High TSS levels—Herschel from Madison Citrus ranks it among his top picks

  • 🌱 Ideal for Grafting: Compatible with a wide range of scions including Valencia, Hamlin, and mandarins

  • 🔬 USDA-Bred Reliability: Over a decade of USDA research and trials back its performance

Flower/Foliage

In a grove lined with memory and sunlight, there occasionally arises a fruit that defies both its lineage and its expectations. Such is the case with the fruit borne on US‑942—a trifoliate hybrid that, despite its parentage, casts off the bitter yoke of its ancestry to offer something altogether refined.

My friend Herschel Walker of Madison Citrus provides the following description: when ripe, the skin of the US‑942 is thick and soft—reminiscent of a mandarin, easy to peel, but protective of the treasure within. Its flesh bursts with juice that is rich and complex, bearing flavors that dance between the sweet citrus of calamondin and the tart brightness of kumquat, yet without the puckering sharpness one might expect.

Bright orange both inside and out, the fruit matures to a size not much larger than a ping pong ball, offering few seeds and little to no trace of the bitter trifoliate aftertaste that haunts lesser hybrids. It is, in Herschel’s words—and I would not challenge him on this—“one of the best-tasting trifoliate hybrids there is.”

And so it is: a fruit of resilience and refinement, quietly excellent, and unmistakably Southern in its contradiction—both humble and magnificent.

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
