1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-11

Sour Orange is widely grown as an ornamental and even as a street tree. It is somewhat naturalized in Florida. It is useful for making marmalade but not otherwise edible. This unnamed selection is propagated from a single tree we were surprised to find growing on the edge of an abandoned sandy field in a remote section of Appling County, Georgia. No residences were nearby. We were attracted to the abundant large and very showy fruit. These were loose skinned and easily peeled but not the least bit edible. Indeed they tasted nasty ! This might be a good orange to plant for looks and as a well deserved treat for those who like to help themselves to such things !

Hardiness Zones: 8 - 11

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Full Sun

Seasonal Behavior: Evergreen

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 15 - 20 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 12 - 15 Feet

Flower Structure: Produces fragrant, white flowers.

Blooming Season: Blooms in spring.

Fruit: The fruit is round and orange with a thick, bumpy rind. The flesh is sour and bitter, often used for marmalade and culinary purposes.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun. Ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production. It can tolerate partial shade but may produce fewer flowers and fruits.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Amend the soil with organic matter such as compost to improve fertility and drainage. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain water.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to ensure the root zone is adequately hydrated. Reduce watering frequency during the winter months when the plant is not actively growing.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate brief periods of frost, but prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures should be avoided. For colder regions, grow the plant in a container and bring it indoors during winter.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for citrus trees in early spring, mid-summer, and early fall. An additional application of micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and zinc can support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruiting.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the tree. Light pruning helps promote good air circulation and light penetration, which can enhance fruit production and reduce the risk of disease.

Pests and Problems: Can be susceptible to common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Monitor regularly and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases. If fungal issues arise, use appropriate fungicides as needed.
