The Meyer lemon is the great container citrus, beloved for thin-skinned, deep yellow-orange fruit that is sweeter and less acidic than a true lemon, and for fragrant, purple-tinged white flowers that come more than once a year. A small evergreen tree, the Meyer is thought to be a natural hybrid of lemon and some other citrus, probably a sweet orange or mandarin, which accounts for the mellow, almost floral flavor that has made the fruit a favorite of cooks.

The lemon carries a bit of history: American plant explorer Frank N. Meyer of the USDA found the tree near Beijing, China, in 1908 and brought it back to the United States, where the fruit has been prized ever since. Hardier than a true lemon but still frost-tender, the Meyer is best grown as a container plant in most of the country, moved under cover before hard freezes, and set outdoors in full sun for the warm months.

In the garden, grow the Meyer in full sun and sharp, well-drained soil, in the ground only in zones 9 to 11, or in a large pot elsewhere. Site where the fragrant bloom can be enjoyed, keep a plant near the kitchen, and enjoy a steady supply of the best lemon a cook can grow.

Design Notes

The classic container citrus, compact, productive, and forgiving, and a natural for a sunny patio, a bright sunroom, or a doorway pot that can be carried indoors for winter. In frost-free gardens, zones 9 to 11, grow the Meyer in the ground in full sun and sharp soil; everywhere colder, keep in a large container to shelter from freezes. Site where the fragrant, repeat bloom can be enjoyed, and keep a plant near the kitchen for a steady supply of sweet-tart lemons. Pairs well with herbs and other sun-loving container plants.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White tinged purple, fragrant, repeat blooming

Flower. Fragrant white flowers washed purple on the outside of the bud, borne more than once a year with the heaviest flush in spring, and much loved by bees.

Fruit. Rounder than a true lemon, thin-skinned and smooth, ripening deep yellow to faint orange; the flesh is juicy, sweeter and less acidic than a common lemon, a cook's favorite.

Foliage. Glossy, dark green, evergreen citrus leaves on a compact, well-branched small tree, ideal for a pot.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six to eight hours of direct sun a day, and the brightest window or a grow light indoors.

Soil. Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil or a quality citrus mix; avoid heavy, wet clay.

Water. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged, letting the top inch dry between waterings; ease off in winter, and check pots often in heat.

Pruning. Prune lightly after a flush to shape and to keep container plants in bounds; remove suckers from below the graft.

Harvest. Fruit ripens over a long season; pick when fully colored and slightly soft, sweeter than a true lemon.

Hardiness. USDA zones 9 to 11; frost-tender, so grow in a container to overwinter indoors in cooler regions.
