Clethra barbinervis, commonly known as Japanese Clethra, is a striking deciduous shrub or small tree native to the mountainous regions of Japan and Korea. This plant has been cherished for centuries in East Asian horticulture for its elegant beauty and robust nature. Japanese Clethra is renowned for its fragrant, white, or pale pink flowers that bloom in mid to late summer, offering a delightful display when many other plants have finished flowering.

A tall tree-like deciduous Clethra with somewhat fragrant terminal racemes of white flowers in summer but best known for it's smooth polished grey to brown and exfoliating bark. A great plant for the winter garden where the bark can be the most beautiful aspect of this plant.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade during the hottest part of the day can help prevent leaf scorch and maintain vibrant foliage color.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in moist, well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. It prefers a pH range of 5.0 to 7.0. Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and structure. It can tolerate wet soils, making it suitable for rain gardens and areas with poor drainage.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Adequate moisture is crucial, particularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-8. Prefers moderate temperatures and can tolerate both humid and dry conditions. It is adaptable to a range of climates within its hardiness zones.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. An annual application of compost or well-rotted manure can enhance soil fertility and promote vigorous growth.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the shrub. Light pruning can help promote a denser growth habit and more prolific flowering. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming to maintain a tidy appearance.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, and caterpillars. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
