Native to the open prairies and meadows of North America, Coreopsis lanceolata, the lanceleaf coreopsis, has long been admired for bright, golden-yellow blooms and an easy, hardy nature. This perennial wildflower has been a staple of North American landscapes for a very long time, growing across a wide range of climates and soils, from sandy coastal ground to the rich prairies of the Midwest.

The genus name Coreopsis comes from the Greek koris (bug) and opsis (appearance), a nod to the seeds and their resemblance to ticks, which also gives the plant the folk name tickseed. Despite that unglamorous association, the flowers tell a sunnier story, a burst of gold that can light up any planting.

Lanceleaf coreopsis carries a long history of use among Native American peoples, who valued the plant for more than beauty. The flowers yield a warm yellow to reddish dye, once used for coloring cloth and craftwork, and some tribes brewed a tea from the plant as a traditional remedy. Over time this cheerful wildflower has traveled far beyond the prairie to become a beloved garden perennial the world over, prized for resilience and for the bees and butterflies the blooms draw in.

A sunny native for a meadow, a prairie or pollinator planting, a dry border, or a naturalized bank, where the golden daisies drift among grasses and other sun lovers. Lanceleaf coreopsis self-sows gently to fill open ground, feeds bees and butterflies through early summer, and shrugs off heat, drought, and poor soil. Pair with little bluestem, black-eyed Susan, and asters, and deadhead or shear for a longer show.

Golden-yellow, daisy-like, late spring to midsummer

Flower. Bright golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers about one and a half to two inches across, a central disc ringed by broad, lobed rays, from late spring into midsummer; deadhead to prolong the show. Bees and butterflies work the blooms steadily.

Foliage. Slender, lance-shaped, bright green leaves in a basal rosette and up the flowering stems, two to four inches long, soft and feathery in texture. Herbaceous and deciduous, dying back in winter and returning in spring.

Light. Full sun for the best bloom; light shade is tolerated.

Soil. Well-drained sandy to loamy ground, even poor or rocky; avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

Water. Drought tolerant once established; water deeply in a prolonged dry spell.

Pruning. Deadhead to prolong bloom, cut back by a third after the first flush for a second, and cut to the ground after frost.

Hardiness. USDA zones 4 to 9; dies back in winter and returns reliably each spring.

Among Native American peoples, lanceleaf coreopsis was valued chiefly as a dye plant, the flowers yielding warm yellow to reddish colors for cloth and craftwork, and some groups also brewed the plant into a traditional tea. Documented medicinal use is limited and local rather than widespread.

Modern laboratory research on the flowers is still at an early stage. Peer-reviewed studies have identified flavonoids, chalcones, and aurones with antioxidant activity, along with preliminary findings on DPP-IV inhibition (of interest for blood sugar) and neuroprotective effects in cell and animal models. These are preclinical results; no clinical trials in people have established benefit or safe dosing.
