Quart | Hardiness Zones 5-9

There is a moment in early spring when a new frond of Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' unfurls, and it is one of the more quietly spectacular things a shade garden produces. The emerging fronds are a vivid copper-orange, almost metallic in certain light, deepening through pink and bronze before settling into the glossy dark green of maturity. 'Brilliance' is a selected form of the autumn fern chosen specifically for the intensity of that color progression, pushing the coppery new growth further than the straight species manages and holding it longer. In a garden where most plants arrive already green, this is a meaningful distinction.

Dryopteris erythrosora is native to the forests of China, Japan, and Korea, where it grows in the humus-rich, consistently moist soils of woodland understories — conditions that translate directly into garden culture and explain why it performs so reliably once established. The species name means "red sori," a reference to the bright red spore cases that appear on the undersides of mature fronds in late summer and autumn, another ornamental feature that most gardeners discover by accident and then look for every year afterward.

'Brilliance' is semi-evergreen in most of its range, holding its fronds through mild winters and providing structure in the garden at the exact moment when structure is most needed. The mature fronds are dark, high-gloss green with a slightly arching habit that gives the plant a composed, architectural quality in the landscape. It is not a fern that asks for attention. It earns it by being consistently excellent across every season, in conditions that other plants negotiate poorly.

The autumn fern has been given more awards than almost any other shade perennial, which suggests either that the award committees are particularly fond of it or that it genuinely warrants the recognition. Both are probably true.

Flower/Foliage

Fronds Bipinnate, arching, broadly lance-shaped, typically 18 to 24 inches long. New fronds emerge in vivid copper-orange to bronze-pink in spring, transitioning through warm bronze tones before maturing to deep, high-gloss dark green. 'Brilliance' is selected for exceptional intensity and duration of this color progression, which is more prolonged and more vivid than in the straight species. New growth continues to emerge through the season, providing recurring flushes of copper color against the mature green fronds. Fronds are semi-evergreen, persisting through mild winters before being replaced by the new spring growth.

Sori Bright red to scarlet sori appear on the undersides of mature fronds in late summer and autumn, arranged in two rows along each pinnule. A distinctive and genuinely ornamental feature on close inspection. The species name erythrosora — "red sori" — refers to this characteristic directly.

Care Info

Sun Part shade to full shade. Performs best in dappled light or consistent indirect light under deciduous canopy. Tolerates deeper shade than many ornamental ferns while maintaining good frond quality. Afternoon shade is essential in the South; morning sun with afternoon protection is the ideal arrangement.

Soil Moist, humus-rich, and well-drained. Amend with leaf mold or compost if soil is lean. Consistent moisture is more important than soil type — this is not a drought-tolerant fern, particularly during establishment. Mulch heavily to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Watering Regular and consistent moisture through the growing season. The coppery new frond color is most vivid and most prolonged when the plant is not under moisture stress. Established plants tolerate brief dry spells but perform noticeably better with reliable summer irrigation in hot climates.

Fertilizing Light top-dressing with compost or leaf mold in early spring is the most appropriate nutrition strategy. No heavy fertilization required. In organically rich woodland soils, no supplemental feeding is needed.

Pruning Remove old or tatty fronds in late winter before new growth emerges. In mild winters where fronds persist, cut them back in late February to make room for the copper spring flush, which is the plant's most ornamental moment. No other pruning required.

Pests and problems Largely trouble-free. Slugs may target emerging fronds in wet springs — hand-pick or use iron phosphate bait where damage is significant. Drought stress causes frond browning and reduces the intensity of the spring color display. Root rot in waterlogged or poorly drained soils is the primary cultural problem to avoid.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
