The vine grows best on fences or trellises in full sun or partial shade. It performs well in sandy soils but adjusts to different conditions. Once established, it holds form and spreads evenly.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. This plant thrives best when exposed to at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can be beneficial to protect the foliage from scorching.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. The ideal soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH range of 5.5-7.0. Gelsemium sempervirens 'Pride of Augusta' is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, provided they are well-draining. Incorporating organic matter like compost can improve soil fertility and structure.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Once established, this plant is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during extended dry periods. Water deeply to encourage deep root growth.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Gelsemium sempervirens 'Pride of Augusta' prefers warm temperatures and is fairly heat-tolerant. It is also frost-hardy and can withstand occasional cold snaps in its hardiness zones. This plant can adapt to a range of humidity levels, making it suitable for various climates within its hardiness range.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. An additional light application of fertilizer in mid-summer can sustain growth and enhance blooming. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.

Pruning: Prune after the flowering period to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged stems. Pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents the plant from becoming too leggy. Regular pruning can help maintain the desired size and shape, especially if grown on a trellis or fence.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract pests like aphids or spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or root rot. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and proper garden hygiene can help keep the plant healthy.
