Yellow-berried Yaupon Holly
Ilex vomitoria "Yawkey"
| Hardiness Zones 7-10
Yaupon Holly is a common evergreen shrub or small tree with small leaves and red berries on female plants. It is found from southeastern Virgina to Texas. It is a popular and adaptable ornamental and there are a number of named varieties including dwarf types. Yaupon provided the caffenated "black drink" of the coastal Indians and a coffee or tea subsititute for some inhabitants of the Virginia and Carolina coastal strip. This Yaupon is a rare yellow-berried selection found years ago by F.G. Tarbox, Jr. on T.A.Yawkey Plantation in Georgetown County, South Carolina. It was introduced by Brookgreen Gardens. It has an upright spreading form and somewhat open growth habit. The beautiful yellow fruit generally holds fall through spring. Yaupon is salt tolerant and can be sheared. A male pollinator may be needed to insure fruit set.
