Flower/Foliage

Flower Description:

Ligustrum quihoui produces abundant clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that bloom in late summer to early autumn. The flowers are borne in upright to slightly arching panicles, measuring 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) in length. They emit a sweet, delicate fragrance, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The blooms create a striking contrast against the dark green foliage and add an airy, graceful aesthetic to the shrub.

Foliage Description:

The foliage of Ligustrum quihoui is composed of small, lance-shaped leaves that are glossy and dark green on the upper surface, with a slightly lighter green underside. Leaves typically measure 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) in length and are arranged oppositely along the stems. The dense foliage provides year-round interest and creates a lush, textured appearance, making the shrub an excellent choice for hedging or as a background plant in mixed borders.

Planting and Location:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For optimal flowering, plant in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Adapts to various soil types, including chalk, loam, and sand, with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to alkaline. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot.
  • Spacing: When planting multiple shrubs, space them 3 to 4 feet apart to allow adequate air circulation and growth.

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep, extensive root system.
  • Established Plants: Once established, waxyleaf privet is drought-tolerant. Water deeply when the top few centimeters of soil dry out, especially during prolonged dry periods.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer or fall. Use approximately 0.7 pounds (0.3 kg) of 15-5-10 or 15-5-15 fertilizer for each 100 square feet (9.29 sq. m.).

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Regular pruning every two months during the growing season is recommended.
  • Method: Remove dead or damaged branches and trim to maintain the desired size and shape. This shrub tolerates severe pruning if necessary.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, occasional infestations of scale insects or fungal diseases may occur. Monitor the plant regularly and treat any issues promptly with appropriate measures.

Additional Considerations:

  • Invasiveness: In some regions, Ligustrum species can become invasive. Before planting, check with local authorities or extension offices to ensure it's appropriate for your area.
  • Wildlife Attraction: The fragrant flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, while the berries provide food for birds, enhancing local biodiversity.
