Myrcianthes fragrans is a member of the myrtle family native to the hammocks and coastal scrub of Florida and the Caribbean, the same botanical neighborhood as guava and allspice, which says something about the family character and the quality of the fragrance involved. Crush a leaf and the scent is immediate and specific: nutmeg with a citrus edge, clean and resinous in a way that makes the plant worth encountering even out of flower. The tiny, deep green leaves hold the aromatic oils responsible, and keep that quality year-round.

The flowers appear in profuse white clusters, small and spidery with prominent stamens, fragrant and reliably drawing butterflies and native bees. They peak in spring and continue sporadically through the year in warm conditions. What follows is arguably the best ornamental moment: small, bright red berries in pairs, the source of the common name twinberry, that ripen through summer and are taken promptly by mockingbirds, waxwings, and a range of other birds that have learned to find them. The fruit is edible for people as well, sweet and mild.

The bark deserves mention. On mature specimens in partial shade, where the foliage thins slightly to reveal the structure beneath, the smooth reddish-brown bark exfoliates in irregular plates with a quiet elegance few shrubs manage. Not a feature that announces itself from a distance, but at close range one of the more distinguished things about the plant.

'Geode' is an improved selection from AgriStarts in Apopka, Florida, chosen for enhanced drought tolerance, reliable fruiting, and a consistently compact habit, the name a nod to the jewel-like quality of the paired red berries against the dark foliage. More manageable in the garden than seedling-grown plants of the straight species, 'Geode' responds well to pruning as a formal hedge or an informal screen.

Design Notes

One of the more versatile plants in the catalog for warm-climate gardens: useful as a formal clipped hedge where boxwood or ligustrum would usually go, as an informal screen or windbreak, as a specimen small tree where the bark and branching can be appreciated, or massed as a wildlife planting where the fruit and bird traffic are the point. The fragrant foliage rewards a spot along a path or near an entry where the nutmeg scent is met at close range. For coastal gardens facing salt spray, wind, and sandy soil, Simpson's stopper is among the most reliable broadleaf evergreens in the hardiness range. Pair with Ilex vomitoria and native grasses for a low-maintenance Southern coastal planting of real ecological value, or use the shrub as a refined backdrop for showier flowering companions, where the quiet, consistent character gives structure across all four seasons.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White, fragrant, spring

Flower. Small, bright white, with numerous graceful stamens extending beyond the petals in a spidery cluster. Borne on paired stalks along the branches, fragrant, and produced most heavily in spring with sporadic flowering through the year in warm climates. Reliably drawing butterflies and native bees.

Foliage. Small, rounded to oval, deep glossy green leaves, densely set on stiff branches, releasing a distinctive nutmeg-citrus scent when crushed. Evergreen and dense in full sun; in part shade the canopy thins to reveal the bark.

Bark. Smooth, reddish-brown, exfoliating in irregular patches on mature stems, most visible in part shade where the foliage is lighter. A genuinely ornamental feature at close range.

Fruit. Small red berries borne in pairs, the twinberry trait behind one common name, ripening through summer into autumn. Edible and sweet, and highly attractive to mockingbirds, waxwings, and other fruit-eating birds. The paired red berries against the dark foliage are the display the cultivar name 'Geode' celebrates.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; densest and most floriferous in full sun, while part shade reveals the bark and eases the plant in the hottest spots. Avoid deep shade.

Soil. Broadly adaptable, from the sandy, slightly acid soils of the native hammocks to clay, loam, alkaline, and salt-laden coastal ground; sharp drainage is welcome, and prolonged waterlogging is not.

Water. Regular moisture through the first season or two to establish, then considerably drought tolerant, needing little supplemental water in average conditions.

Pruning. Responds well to shaping as a formal hedge, an informal screen, or a small tree; prune after the spring flush to spare the developing fruit, and hard-prune to rejuvenate. Left alone, develops into a graceful multi-stemmed small tree.

Hardiness. Evergreen through zones 8 to 11; salt, wind, and drought tough once established, and largely free of pests and disease.
