'Geode' Twinberry

Myrcianthes fragrans 'Geode'

| Hardiness Zones 8-11

Myrcianthes fragrans is a member of the myrtle family native to the hammocks and coastal scrub of Florida and the Caribbean — the same botanical neighborhood as guava and allspice, which tells you something about the family's general character and the quality of the fragrance involved. Crush a leaf and the scent is immediate and specific: nutmeg with a citrus edge, clean and resinous in a way that makes the plant interesting to encounter even when it isn't flowering. The tiny, deep green leaves contain the aromatic oils responsible, and they hold that quality year-round.

The flowers appear in profuse white clusters, small and spidery with prominent stamens, fragrant and reliably attractive to butterflies and native bees. They peak in spring but continue sporadically through the year in warm conditions. What follows is arguably the plant's best ornamental moment: small, bright red berries in pairs — earning it the common name twinberry — that ripen through summer and are taken promptly by mockingbirds, waxwings, and a range of other species that have learned to find them. The fruit is edible for people as well, sweet and mild.

The bark deserves mention. On mature specimens in partial shade, where the foliage thins slightly to reveal the structure beneath, the smooth reddish-brown bark exfoliates in irregular plates with a quiet elegance that few shrubs manage. It is not a feature that announces itself from a distance, but at close range it is one of the more distinguished things about the plant.

'Geode' is an improved selection from AgriStarts in Apopka, Florida, chosen for enhanced drought tolerance, reliable fruiting, and consistent compact habit — the name a reference to the jewel-like quality of the paired red berries against the dark foliage. It is more manageable in the garden than seedling-grown straight species, and responds well to pruning as a formal hedge or informal screen.

Evergreen

Flower/Foliage

Flowers
Small, bright white, with numerous graceful stamens extending beyond the petals in a spidery cluster. Borne in paired stalks along the branches, fragrant and produced most heavily in spring with sporadic flowering year-round in warm climates. Reliably attractive to butterflies and native bees.

Foliage
Leaves are small, rounded to oval, deep glossy green, densely arranged on stiff branches. Release a distinctive nutmeg-citrus fragrance when crushed. Foliage is evergreen and remains dense in full sun; in part shade it thins slightly, revealing the ornamental bark beneath.

Bark
Smooth, reddish-brown, exfoliating in irregular patches on mature stems. Most visible in part shade where foliage is less dense. A genuinely ornamental feature at close range.

Fruit
Small red berries borne in pairs — the twinberry characteristic from which the common name derives. Ripen through summer and into autumn. Edible and sweet; highly attractive to mockingbirds, waxwings, and a range of frugivorous birds. The paired red berries against dark foliage are the ornamental feature the cultivar name 'Geode' references.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Sun
Full sun to part shade. Densest, most floriferous growth in full sun. Part shade is tolerated and reveals the bark more effectively, but reduces fruiting somewhat. Avoid deep shade.

Soil
Broadly adaptable. Performs well in the sandy, well-drained, slightly acidic soils of its native Florida hammock habitat, and tolerates clay, loam, alkaline conditions, and salt-laden coastal soils. Drought tolerant once established. Does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.

Watering
Regular moisture during establishment, typically the first one to two seasons. Once rooted in, considerably drought tolerant and requires little supplemental irrigation in average conditions. Tolerates both dry spells and occasional wet periods better than most ornamental shrubs.

Fertilizing
Light balanced fertilizer in early spring if desired. Not a heavy feeder — established plants in average soils require little supplemental nutrition. In sandy coastal soils, annual slow-release fertilization supports best growth and fruiting.

Pruning
Responds well to pruning and can be maintained as a formal hedge, informal screen, or shaped specimen. Prune after the main spring flowering flush to avoid removing developing fruit. Tolerates hard pruning for rejuvenation. Left unpruned, develops into a graceful, multi-stemmed small tree with considerable natural character.

Pests and problems
Generally pest and disease resistant. Salt spray tolerant, hurricane wind resistant, and drought hardy once established — a genuinely tough plant once it finds its footing. No significant problems in cultivation.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
