Himalanan Choke Berry

Photinia integrifolia

$23.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-9

Related to the Chinese Photinia (Photinia serrulata) this small evergreen tree is widespread in southeast Asia but virtually unknown in the U.S. It is probably less cold hardy but maybe better than other Photinia in warmer zones. The leaves are not toothed. The flat clusters of white flowers followed by pink to purple fruits should make it an attractive ornamental. We would appreciate any reports from customers who experiment with this little-known Photinia species.

Planting Requirements

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In warmer climates, partial shade can help prevent leaf scorch.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Tolerates a range of soil types but performs best in loamy, organically rich conditions.
  • Planting Time: Plant in spring or fall when temperatures are mild to allow for strong root establishment.

Watering

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a robust root system.
  • Once established, Photinia integrifolia is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods to maintain lush foliage.

Fertilization

  • Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
  • Mulch with organic matter around the base to improve soil quality and retain moisture.

Pruning

  • Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Light trimming throughout the growing season helps maintain its natural form and encourages bushy growth.

Pests and Diseases

  • Generally resistant to pests, but monitor for signs of scale insects, aphids, or fungal leaf spot, particularly in humid climates. Treat with horticultural oil or appropriate fungicides if needed.
  • Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.

Growth Habit and Size

  • Grows as a medium to large evergreen shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 10–25 feet and a spread of 8–15 feet, depending on conditions.
  • Dense, upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or specimen planting.

Special Features

  • Foliage: Attractive, leathery green leaves that are glossy and elliptical, creating a lush, tropical look. New growth often emerges with a reddish hue, adding seasonal interest.
  • Flowers: Clusters of small, white, mildly fragrant flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Fruit: Produces small, red berries that mature to black, providing visual interest and food for birds.

Winter Care

  • Hardy in USDA zones 8–9. Protect young plants from frost in cooler regions by covering them during cold snaps or applying mulch around the base for insulation.

Additional Tips

  • Photinia integrifolia is ideal for use as a privacy screen, windbreak, or backdrop in tropical or subtropical gardens.
  • Avoid overwatering and ensure soil drains well to prevent root rot.

With its striking foliage, pollinator-friendly flowers, and year-round interest, Photinia integrifolia is a versatile and low-maintenance addition to gardens in warmer climates.
