Flower:

Prunus mume 'Peggy Clarke' features stunning, double rose-pink flowers that bloom profusely in late winter to early spring. Each blossom is deeply fragrant, with a delicate, ruffled appearance. The flowers emerge on bare branches, creating a striking display when most other plants are still dormant. This early bloom time is one of its most celebrated characteristics.

Fruit:

Following the flowers, small, round, apricot-like fruits appear in late spring to early summer. The fruits are yellowish-green when ripe and have a tart, slightly bitter flavor. While not commonly eaten fresh, they are traditionally used in preserves or pickled in East Asian cuisine.

Foliage:

The foliage of 'Peggy Clarke' consists of ovate, serrated leaves that emerge bright green in spring. Through the summer, the leaves maintain their vibrant green hue before turning a golden-yellow in autumn, adding a subtle layer of seasonal interest. Once the foliage drops, the dark, elegant branching structure provides additional visual appeal in winter.

Prunus mume 'Peggy Clarke', commonly known as the Japanese Apricot, is a deciduous tree admired for its fragrant, rose-pink double flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring. To ensure its healthy growth and abundant flowering, follow these care instructions:

Planting Location:

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun to partial shade. While it thrives with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, providing some afternoon shade in hotter climates can prevent leaf scorch.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, acidic loam soils. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained areas, as these can lead to root rot.

Watering:

  • Establishment Period: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
  • Mature Trees: Once established, water moderately. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings.

Pruning:

  • Timing: Prune immediately after flowering, typically in early spring, to avoid removing next season's buds.
  • Method: Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches to promote good air circulation and a strong structure. Light annual pruning helps maintain a compact shape.

Fertilization:

  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to excessive vegetative growth at the expense of flowering.

Pest and Disease Management:

  • Common Issues: Watch for aphids, scale, borers, bacterial canker, and brown rot.
  • Preventative Measures: Regularly inspect the tree, maintain proper spacing for air circulation, and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk.

Winter Care:

  • 'Peggy Clarke' is hardy in USDA Zones 6-9. In areas prone to late winter frosts, consider planting in a protected location to shield early blooms from freeze damage.
