Fragrant Sumac

Rhus aromatica

$25.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 3-9

Rhus aromatica, the Fragrant Sumac, is a versatile deciduous shrub native to much of the eastern United States, where it grows in scattered woodlands, rocky slopes, and open banks. Its trifoliate leaves, often mistaken for poison oak at first glance, are entirely harmless. When crushed, they release a pleasant fragrance—one of the many reasons this species has long been admired in gardens and natural plantings.

In summer, the foliage is a soft blue-green, giving a fine texture in the landscape. Female plants bear clusters of hairy red fruits that ripen in late summer and persist through winter, providing food for birds and a splash of seasonal color. In autumn, the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and purple, making this shrub as valuable for fall display as it is for year-round structure.

Fragrant Sumac thrives in a wide range of conditions, growing well in full sun or light shade, and is especially suited to dry banks, slopes, and difficult sites where erosion control is needed. Its adaptability to poor, rocky, or sandy soils makes it a reliable choice for naturalistic plantings. Several low-growing selections and named varieties have been developed for use as groundcovers and mass plantings, particularly in areas where turf is impractical.

Highly variable in form, Fragrant Sumac may grow as a low, spreading ground-hugger or develop into a shrub of 6–12 feet in height. Whatever its habit, it offers durability, ecological value, and seasonal interest—a true multi-purpose native shrub.

For gardeners and land stewards alike, Rhus aromatica is both beautiful and practical: a plant that anchors slopes, feeds wildlife, and brightens the seasons with fragrance and color.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
