Viburnum nudum 'Pollinator' is a native viburnum shrub valued for its compatibility with the 'Winterthur' variety. This selection improves fruit production when grown nearby.

Although not strictly dioecious, it benefits from additional clones for a better fruit set. The plant produces flowers and fruit, supporting pollinators and native wildlife.

This pollinator viburnum thrives in moist, well-drained soil and adapts to partial shade or full sun. Its upright growth and seasonal interest suit borders, mixed plantings, and habitat-focused landscapes.

Light Requirements:

Prefers full sun to partial shade. For best flowering and fruit set, provide at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Soil Preferences:

Thrives in moist, acidic, and well-drained soils. It can tolerate clay, loam, or sandy soils and is particularly well-suited to wetland edges or consistently moist garden spots.

Watering:

Keep soil evenly moist, especially during the first few years after planting. Once established, Viburnum nudum is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells.

Spacing & Growth Habit:

Typically reaches 5–12 feet tall and wide, with a dense, upright branching habit. Space plants about 5–8 feet apart for use in screens or naturalized groupings.

Pruning:

Minimal pruning is needed. Prune just after flowering if shaping is desired, as buds for the following year form on old wood.

Fertilization:

Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which can inhibit flowering.

Pollination & Fruit Set:

This cultivar, ‘Pollinator,’ is specifically grown to enhance fruit production on other Viburnum nudum cultivars like ‘Winterthur’ or ‘Brandywine.’ While it flowers beautifully in its own right, it does not produce showy fruit unless cross-pollinated with other clones of Viburnum nudum.

Fall Interest:

Deciduous, with striking autumn leaf colors in shades of burgundy, red, and purple. Though not evergreen, its seasonal change adds year-round interest.

Wildlife Value:

Highly attractive to pollinators during its spring bloom. When paired with compatible cultivars, it supports birds and wildlife by contributing to fall berry production.
