The sour orange is grown across the warm world as an ornamental and even a street tree, and stands somewhat naturalized in Florida. The fruit is famous for marmalade and useful little else, since the flesh is fiercely sour and bitter, not for eating out of hand. This particular unnamed selection has a Woodlanders story: we propagated the tree from a single specimen found growing on the edge of an abandoned sandy field in a remote corner of Appling County, Georgia, with no house anywhere near. What drew us was the crop, abundant, large, and very showy, loose-skinned and easy to peel.

Easy to peel, yes, and utterly inedible. The fruits tasted, in a word, nasty. So here is a handsome orange to plant purely for looks, and as a well-deserved treat for anyone inclined to help themselves to fruit that is not theirs.

Beyond the garden, the sour orange, Citrus aurantium, carries one of the deepest medicinal and culinary histories of any citrus. The fragrant flowers yield neroli and orange-blossom water for perfume and flavor; the bitter peel flavors liqueurs and marmalade; and in traditional Chinese medicine the dried immature fruit and peel, zhi shi and zhi qiao, have been used for centuries as digestive remedies. In the garden here, though, the tree earns a place for the showy fruit and the sweetly fragrant spring bloom.

Design Notes

An ornamental sour orange for the warm garden, handsome as a specimen, an evergreen screen, or even a street tree in frost-free zones, and grown here purely for the showy, abundant fruit and the sweetly fragrant spring bloom. Give full sun and sharp, well-drained soil in the ground through zones 8 to 11, or a large container to overwinter farther north. Site where the fragrant flowers can be enjoyed in spring, and keep in mind the fruit is strictly for looks and the marmalade pot, not for eating fresh.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White, fragrant, spring

Flower. Intensely fragrant white flowers in spring, the source of neroli and orange-blossom water, and a magnet for bees.

Fruit. Round, orange fruit with a thick, bumpy rind and sour, bitter flesh; not for fresh eating, but prized for marmalade, and in this selection showy and abundant.

Foliage. Glossy, dark green, aromatic evergreen leaves with the winged petioles typical of the sour orange.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six to eight hours of direct sun a day, with a little shade tolerated at the cost of flower and fruit.

Soil. Rich, well-drained ground, slightly acidic to neutral; avoid heavy, wet clay.

Water. Water regularly through establishment, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged; ease off in winter.

Pruning. Prune in late winter to shape and to clear dead or crossing wood; a sturdy grower needing little correction.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 11; hardier than sweet orange, with container culture and shelter at the cold edge.

History & tradition

The sour or bitter orange holds one of the richest medicinal and aromatic histories of any citrus. In traditional Chinese medicine the dried immature fruit and peel, known as zhi shi and zhi qiao, have been used for centuries to ease indigestion, bloating, and constipation and to move what practitioners call stagnant qi. In Europe the bitter peel became a classic digestive bitter, while the fragrant flowers, distilled as neroli and orange-blossom water, were valued to calm and to scent. The chief active compound, p-synephrine, has been widely studied in modern times, especially in weight-management and stimulant products, with mixed findings and real cautions.
