PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 5 - 9

Soil: Well-drained and Fertile

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Deciduous

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 8 - 10 Inches

Spread at Maturity: 10 - 12 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are large, deeply lobed, and resemble oak leaves. They are dark green in summer, turning rich shades of red, purple, and bronze in the fall.

Flowers: Produces large, upright, conical flower clusters that start white and gradually turn pinkish as they age. The blooms appear from late spring to early summer and can persist into fall, providing long-lasting beauty in the garden.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full sun. Hydrangea quercifolia "Alison" thrives best in areas with morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in warmer climates. It can tolerate full sun, particularly in cooler regions, but too much direct sunlight can cause the foliage to scorch and reduce flower production. Ideally, aim for at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. "Alison" prefers rich, loamy soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH range of 5.5-6.5. It can adapt to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, provided they drain well. Incorporating organic matter like compost or leaf mold can improve soil fertility and help retain moisture, which is essential for optimal growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Hydrangea quercifolia "Alison" is more drought-tolerant than some other hydrangea species, but regular watering during hot and dry conditions will help maintain healthy growth and flower production. Mulching around the base of the plant helps conserve soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. "Alison" is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate cold winters, with the plant going dormant in the winter and regrowing in the spring. It prefers moderate to high humidity levels but can adapt to varying conditions. Protection from harsh winds and frost will help ensure the plant remains healthy throughout the growing season.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. A second feeding in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during the peak blooming period. Fertilize lightly, as excessive nitrogen can result in lush foliage with fewer blooms. Using organic compost or a hydrangea-specific fertilizer is recommended.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since "Alison" blooms on old wood, it's essential to avoid heavy pruning, which could reduce the number of flowers for the next season. Remove dead or weak stems and shape the plant as needed. If the plant becomes too large, it can be pruned after flowering to control its size.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by aphids, spider mites, or leaf spot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and good garden hygiene can help maintain plant health.
