Lanceleaf Coreopsis

Coreopsis lenceolata

$16.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 4-9

Native to the open prairies and meadows of North America, Coreopsis lanceolata, also known as Lanceleaf Coreopsis, has long been admired for its bright, golden-yellow blooms and hardy nature. This perennial wildflower has been a staple of North American landscapes for centuries, evolving to thrive in a wide range of climates and soil conditions, from sandy coastal regions to the rich prairies of the Midwest.

Its name, Coreopsis, comes from the Greek words koris (bug) and opsis (appearance), a nod to the seed’s resemblance to ticks. Despite this less-than-glamorous association, its blooms tell a different story: a burst of sunshine that can brighten any landscape.

Coreopsis lanceolata has a rich history of use by Native American tribes, who valued it not only for its beauty but also for its practical uses. Traditionally, the flowers were used to create yellow dyes for clothing and tools, while some tribes brewed a tea from the plant to treat various ailments, from stomach aches to internal bleeding.

Over time, this cheerful wildflower has spread far beyond the prairies, becoming a beloved ornamental in gardens across the world. Its resilience and ability to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies have cemented its place as a favorite for modern gardeners who seek both beauty and ecological benefit.

Coreopsis lanceolata produces bright, golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers that typically measure about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. Each flower head features a central cluster of tiny disc florets surrounded by showy, ray-like petals with rounded tips. Blooming from late spring to mid-summer, these cheerful flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage additional flowering throughout the season.

The foliage of Coreopsis lanceolata consists of slender, lance-shaped leaves that grow in a basal rosette and along the flowering stems. The leaves are bright green and can reach lengths of 2 to 4 inches, with smooth or slightly toothed margins. The plant’s foliage provides a soft, feathery texture that contrasts beautifully with its vibrant blooms. As a deciduous perennial, the foliage dies back in the winter, returning in the spring with new growth.

Sunlight:

Coreopsis lanceolata thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It can tolerate partial shade, but for the best blooms and overall health, place it in a sunny spot.

Soil:

This plant isn’t picky when it comes to soil. It prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil but can tolerate poor soils, including those that are rocky or slightly acidic. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.

Watering:

Once established, Coreopsis lanceolata is drought-tolerant. Water deeply when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, but be careful not to overwater, as it can lead to root rot. During prolonged dry spells, occasional watering will keep the blooms thriving.

Fertilizing:

Coreopsis does well in average soil, and often doesn’t require fertilization. If your soil is very poor, a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can give it a little boost.

Pruning & Deadheading:

To encourage prolonged blooming, deadhead spent flowers throughout the growing season. You can also cut the plant back by about a third after the first bloom to encourage a second flush of flowers. In late fall or early winter, cut the plant back to the ground after it dies back naturally.

Mulching:

Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, especially in hotter climates.

Pests & Diseases:

Coreopsis lanceolata is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it an easy-care addition to any garden. However, it can occasionally be affected by aphids or powdery mildew. Treat pests with insecticidal soap, and ensure good air circulation to prevent mildew.

Propagation:

Coreopsis lanceolata can be propagated by division in the spring or fall. You can also collect seeds after the blooms have dried and plant them in the following spring.

Bloom Time:

This plant typically blooms from late spring to mid-summer, with golden-yellow flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Winter Care:

In colder regions, Coreopsis lanceolata will die back to the ground in winter but reliably returns each spring. Adding a light layer of mulch around the base can help protect the roots during colder months.
