Neches River Hibiscus

Hibiscus dasycalyx

$30.00
Low Stock

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

Described only in 1968, and even then from a handful of sites in the bottomlands of east Texas — Houston, Trinity, and Cherokee counties, along the Neches, Angelina, and Trinity rivers. The total wild population has been estimated in the low thousands. Whole years of botanical fieldwork in the southeast have turned up fewer plants than a single good nursery bed.
It lives in a strange and specific habitat: seasonally flooded sloughs and oxbow margins, often threaded through the pimple-mound microtopography peculiar to east Texas bottomlands. The plants stand in spring floodwater for weeks, then ride out August on cracked clay. Multiple stems rise from a thick woody base to four or five feet, carrying the narrow linear leaves that distinguish this species at a glance from its showier kin. Saucer-sized flowers open one at a time from midsummer, ivory white with a deep maroon throat, the calyx behind them softly pubescent — dasycalyx meaning “hairy cup.”
The threats are habitat loss, of course, but also something quieter and more genetic. Hibiscus laevis is common, aggressive, and freely hybridizes wherever the two ranges touch, diluting the dasycalyx line within a few generations. Some botanists consider this the more pressing threat. Federally listed as threatened in 2013, which means it cannot cross state lines. South Carolina and in-person purchase only.
Full sun and moisture. It will take wet feet, irrigated borders, or anywhere in between.

Flower, Fruit and Foliage

Three-inch saucer-shaped flowers in ivory white with a deep pink to maroon throat, opening sequentially from midsummer into early fall. Narrow linear leaf blades, distinctly slimmer than other native perennial hibiscus, on multiple stems rising from a thick woody crown. The calyx is softly pubescent — the species name dasycalyx means “hairy cup.”

Plant in full sun and moist to wet soil. This is a bottomland species at heart, equally at home in a rain garden, a pond margin, or a regularly irrigated border. Tolerates standing water in spring and short droughts in summer once established, though it resents prolonged dryness and will tell you so by dropping leaves.
Cut back to the base in late winter; the plant returns from a thick woody crown each spring and grows quickly to four or five feet by flowering time. A spring topdressing of compost is appreciated but not required. Japanese beetles will sometimes find the leaves; pick them off in the cool of the morning when they are slow.
A note on seed: if you grow other perennial hibiscus nearby, expect hybrid seedlings. Either rogue them out or grow this species in isolation if you want to keep the line clean.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
