Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' is the all-purple form of the Mexican bush sage, and the difference is worth seeing. Where the common kind carries small white corollas against purple calyces, 'Midnight' drops the white altogether, so the long arching spikes read as pure, saturated purple from calyx to flower, a deeper and more solid color that carries even further across an autumn garden.

In every other way the selection keeps the virtues of the species: a rounded, shrubby mound of arching stems, narrow gray-green leaves that are white-woolly beneath and softly aromatic when brushed, and the same silvered, felted texture that looks good long before the flowers arrive. Native to the highlands of Mexico, the Mexican bush sage is built for heat and sun.

The flowers pour out from late summer through the first frost, a long and generous run of lavender-purple that draws hummingbirds fueling for migration along with bees and butterflies. The velvety, fragrant foliage is left alone by deer and shrugs off most pests and diseases, so the plant asks little once settled.

Site 'Midnight' in full sun in well-drained soil, at the back or middle of a border, in a pollinator bed, or in a large container, and let the solid purple spikes play against warm-season grasses, asters, and the golds of fall. The spikes cut and dry well for arrangements. In zone 8 and warmer the plant returns from the root each spring; farther north it makes a fast, showy annual. Cut the old growth down in late winter.

Design Notes

Use 'Midnight' where a solid, deep purple will carry: the back or middle of a sunny border, a pollinator bed, or a large container. The pure-purple spikes read even more strongly than the two-tone species and glow against silver foliage and the golds of autumn. Pair with warm-season grasses, asters, and goldenrod, give full sun and sharp drainage, and cut the spikes for fresh or dried arrangements. In zone 8 and warmer the plant returns from the root; farther north grow it as a fast annual, and cut the old growth down in late winter.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Long arching spikes of solid, saturated purple, calyx and corolla alike, from late summer through frost; a hummingbird draw.

Flower. Long, arching spikes of solid, saturated purple, keeping the velvety purple calyces but dropping the white corollas of the species, so the whole spike reads pure purple. Rich in nectar, from late summer to frost, and a strong draw for migrating hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Foliage. Narrow, gray-green, lance-shaped leaves, white-woolly beneath and aromatic when brushed, silvered and soft-textured through the season.

Habit. A rounded, shrubby, tender perennial of three to four feet, arching in habit and returning from the root in mild-winter gardens.

Care

Light. Full sun for the fullest bloom; tolerates light afternoon shade.

Soil. Well-drained soil of average fertility; heavy, wet winter ground is the main danger.

Water. Water to establish, then drought-tolerant; an occasional deep soak keeps growth lush.

Pruning. Cut the old stems to the ground in late winter; a pinch in early summer curbs flopping in rich soil.

Hardiness. USDA Zones 7 to 10, returning from the root; grown as an annual farther north.
