Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Gulftide'

'Gulftide' is the tea olive to reach for when you want the fragrance of the genus and the toughness to carry it through a cold winter. A dense, upright evergreen with glossy, dark green, spiny holly-like leaves, this selection covers itself in tiny waxy white flowers in autumn, and the scent they throw is out of all proportion to the size of the bloom, sweet and carrying, one of the real pleasures of the fall garden.

The plant is a form of Osmanthus heterophyllus, the holly osmanthus of Japan, still sometimes met under the old name Osmanthus ilicifolius. Despite the holly look, the giveaway is in the leaves: they sit opposite each other on the stem, where a true holly's are alternate. The genus name comes from the Greek for fragrant flower, osme and anthos, and heterophyllus means variable-leaved, for the way the spiny juvenile foliage gives way to smoother edges with age. The family is Oleaceae, in the good company of lilac, jasmine, and the sweet olive.

'Gulftide' earns a place for cold-hardiness above all, introduced years ago by the old Gulfstream Nursery of Wachapreague, Virginia, and long regarded as one of the most cold-tolerant of the holly osmanthus. The dense, spiny habit makes a superb evergreen hedge or screen, and the same armament that turns aside a careless hand also turns aside browsing deer. A Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal in 2017 confirmed what Southern gardeners had known for decades.

Grow 'Gulftide' in sun or part shade and ordinary well-drained soil, and the shrub asks for little beyond the occasional shearing to keep a hedge crisp; growth is slow and dense, ultimately ten to fifteen feet if left unpruned. Use the plant as a fragrant fall-blooming hedge, a screen, a barrier where the spines discourage traffic, or a foundation evergreen, and cut a few sprigs of the holly-like foliage for winter arrangements. One note of honesty on scent: the culinary tea-olive tradition belongs to the related Osmanthus fragrans, not to this holly-leaved cousin, but for sheer autumn perfume in a hardy hedge, 'Gulftide' is hard to beat.
