1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9

Winterberry Holly is a small to medium size multi-stem decidous shrub found in moist to wet soils over much of the eastern U.S. The female plants produce masses of very showy red berries on the bare stems and make a striking effect in late fall and winter. Two forms, northern and southern, are similar but the northern form tends to be more dwarf and blooms at a different time requiring a specific pollenator. This is the early blooming pollinator for 'Winter Red', a southern clone of I. verticillata,

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. "Southern Gentleman" thrives in full sunlight, which promotes the healthiest growth and ensures that it can effectively pollinate nearby female winterberries. It can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates, but full sun is ideal for maximizing its role in the garden.

Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-draining, acidic soil. This plant grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 4.5-6.5. "Southern Gentleman" is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining and retain moisture. Incorporating organic matter such as compost or peat moss into the soil improves its structure and fertility, enhancing overall plant health.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Ilex verticillata prefers consistently moist soil, particularly during the growing season. While it can tolerate wet soils, it should not be left in waterlogged conditions for extended periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool, which is beneficial during hot, dry spells.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 3-9. "Southern Gentleman" is well-suited to a wide range of climates and is especially valuable in colder regions due to its winter hardiness. It can withstand cold winters and frost, making it an excellent choice for colder climates. The plant prefers moderate humidity levels but can adapt to various humidity conditions.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional application in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its active growing season. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility and promoting overall plant health.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since "Southern Gentleman" is a male plant and does not produce berries, pruning can be more extensive if needed to control its size or shape. Regular pruning helps maintain a dense, attractive form and encourages healthy new growth.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally be affected by common garden pests like aphids or scale insects. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant can help prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspection and proper garden hygiene are essential for maintaining plant health.
