$20.00 Sold out

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 7-9

A very rare and endangered perennial Hibiscus found on the Neches River in east Texas where it is threatened by hybridizaton with Hibiscus militaris. This species has multiple stems from a thick base. It is readily distinguished by the narrow linear leaf blades, pubescent calyx, and 3" diameter ivory colored flowers with deep pink to maroon throats. This rare Hibiscus is easily grown in full sun in moist to wet sites or in irrigated garden soil. If propagated from seed note that it may hybridize with other perennial Hibiscus growing nearby. In 2013 this species was declared "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act and federal law prohibits its sale in interstate commerce. We can offer it for sale only in South Carolina.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 7 - 9

Soil: Well-drained and Moist

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior:

Growth Rate: Fast

Height at Maturity: 3 - 4 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 2 - 3 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are lance-shaped, dark green, and slightly hairy, providing a lush backdrop to the flowers.

Flowers: Produces large, showy white flowers with a maroon or red eye in the center. The flowers bloom from late spring through summer and can reach up to 6 inches in diameter, attracting a variety of pollinators.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal flowering and growth, plant Hibiscus dasycalyx in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates, but full sun will promote the best flower production.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, moist to wet soils. This plant is naturally found in wetland areas, so it prefers soil that is consistently moist. It can adapt to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils, but does best in rich, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0-7.5. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as the plant prefers consistently moist conditions.

Watering: Requires regular watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season and dry periods. Hibiscus dasycalyx is adapted to wet environments and can tolerate standing water for short periods. However, avoid waterlogging the soil for extended periods to prevent root rot. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 7-9. Hibiscus dasycalyx prefers warm temperatures and is well-suited to temperate to subtropical climates. It can tolerate occasional frost but should be protected from prolonged freezing conditions. The plant thrives in high humidity and is well-adapted to wetland conditions.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and encourage abundant flowering. Fertilize again in mid-summer to sustain vigor during the peak growing season. Using organic compost or well-rotted manure can also improve soil fertility and plant health. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Removing dead or damaged branches will promote healthy growth and maintain the plant’s shape. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage continued blooming and prevent self-seeding if desired.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by pests such as aphids, spider mites, or Japanese beetles. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap, neem oil, or an appropriate fungicide. Regular monitoring and proper garden hygiene can help maintain the plant’s health.
