About the The Callicarpa Collection Collection

Callicarpa, the beautyberries, are shrubs grown for one of the most startling displays in the plant world: dense clusters of small, jewel-bright berries, most famously a vivid violet-purple, packed along arching stems in autumn. Through spring and summer they are pleasant, unassuming shrubs with soft green leaves and modest flowers; then the fruit colors, and for weeks the whole shrub looks almost artificial, so bright is the display. White-fruited kinds offer the same effect in gleaming pearl.

In the landscape beautyberries earn their place for that single, unforgettable season, and hold it well. Loose and arching in habit, they suit the mixed border, the woodland edge, and the naturalistic planting, where the berries read best against darker foliage or the low autumn light. Cut back hard in late winter, they bloom and fruit freely on new growth, staying full and productive year after year.

We grow beautyberries for that unmatched fall color and their genuine value to wildlife. The autumn fruit is a favorite of many songbirds, feeding them into the cold months, and the summer flowers draw pollinators; several kinds are Southeastern natives, tough and adaptable in sun or part shade. Few shrubs give so much drama for so little trouble.

Give them sun to part shade and ordinary, well-drained soil, and cut them back in late winter for the heaviest fruiting. Set them among our Small & Medium Shrubs and Large Shrubs, and find more native fruiting shrubs in our Southeastern Natives.
